Is HMRC's new app any good?
HMRC has recently launched an app that allows you to do certain things via your smartphone. Is it worth using?
HMRC’s new app doesn’t allow you to file a tax return – at least not yet. However, it does allow you to access a lot of key information – including your tax code, NI number, income history going back five previous years, and your current self-assessment balance. But it also has some interactive functionality. You can also use it to:
- make a Self Assessment payment;
- report tax credits changes and complete your renewal;
- access your Help to Save account;
- use a tax calculator to work out your take home pay after Income Tax and National Insurance deductions;
- track forms and letters you have sent to HMRC;
- claim a refund if you have paid too much tax; and
- update your postal address.
The app is available for both iOS and Android platforms from the respective stores. You will need your existing Government Gateway log in information the first time you use it.
